The Wall Street Journal reports that online retail behemoth Amazon is preparing to debut its first Amazon-branded smartphone in June. WSJ sources say the company has partnered with HTC to produce the device, which will create 3D images without the need for 3D glasses.
Following the launch of the Fire TV earlier this month, the Amazon phone will mark the second of Apple’s product categories the online retailer hopes to invade in 2014. With its Kindle Fire tablets, Amazon has been attempting to position itself to compete with the iPad for a few years.
The WSJ report says the new device will reportedly sport a display that can create 3D images without the need for glasses. The phone would use retina-tracking technology embedded in four front-facing camera to make some images appear to be 3D.
Other companies have attempted similar displays, but none have succeeded in bringing the technology to the mainstream market.
The WSJ report says production of the Amazon smartphone will begin at the end of April, and that it would likely start shipping in September.
