Apple’s iOS 7.1 update includes a pop-up warning message for users who make an in-app purchase for the first time. The message reminds them of the 15-minute grace period in which additional purchases may be made without the need for reentering their password.
AppleInsider published the screenshot seen above, of the iOS 7.1 message informing users about Apple’s content policies. Users see the message after completing their initial in-app purchase.
The pop-up offers access to a users’ iOS device’s settings, where changes can be made to apply in-app purchase limitations, including the option to require a password for every purchase. A user can also completely turn off in-app purchases if they wish.
Although the 15-minute no password grace period has been in effect ever since the App Store debuted in 2009, some users may not have been aware of the policy. Apple recently settled a lawsuit brought by the U.S. Federal Trade Commission over in-app purchasing on iOS devices. The government had argued that Apple’s system made it too easy for children to purchase in-app items without their parent’s consent.
Under the settlement with the government, Apple will refund some $32.5 million to parents whose children made unauthorized in-app purchases. Apple also agrees to change the way the App Store operated in order to confirm purchases are being made by legitimate account holders.
