New photos of Apple’s Mesa, Arizona sapphire plant show external construction is progressing nicely, and a new rumor claims the site may even be expanded into a neighboring structure.
AppleInsider received a batch of photos showing the progress on the plant, being built in partnership with GT Advanced Technologies. From the photos, all indications are that the construction is nearing completion.
The source of the photos says construction personnel are working around the clock and during weekends to complete the project by June. It was revealed in January that Apple’s “go live” target date was February, so the plant may be already partially active.
The local electrical industry is abuzz with rumors claiming Apple may be considering a project expansion, possibly moving into the nearby building once owned by photovoltaic panel maker First Solar.
The plant, is believed to be used to produce a new sapphire part destined for an Apple device. At this point, it is not certain if that will be an entirely new component, or if it will be used to replace a current one. However, most rumors point to the use of the sapphire glass as a more durable display for the upcoming “iPhone 6.”
