The International Business Times is reporting that detectives, investigating the killing of Reeva Steenkamp – girlfriend of double-amputee athlete Oscar Pistorius – Have traveled to Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, California to seek their help in accessing the athlete’s iPhone.
IBT, via 9to5Mac:
Prosecutors want to access its SMS and WhatsApp messages as evidence for the trial.
South African police have been struggling to gain access to the phone for months, one of several handsets found in the double-amputee athlete’s Pretoria villa on the night he shot girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp.
Pistorius has told police that he cannot remember the passcode for the device.
South African police had requested the FBI to authorize Apple to unlock the phone, but the FBI has not yet complied. The matter is becoming more urgent, as Pistorius’ murder trial begins on Monday.
The athlete has admitted to shooting girlfriend Steenkamp through a bathroom door, however he says he did so as he believed she was an intruder. Prosecutors will argue that he deliberately shot her following an altercation between the two.
