Basis Science, makers of the Basis Health Tracker Watch, is reportedly up for grabs, and has been talking to tech companies, including Apple, Google, Microsoft, and Samsung.
According to sources familiar with the matter, Basis has been actively seeking a buyer for its health tracking smartwatch business over the “past few weeks” and has talked with Apple, Google and possibly others about an acquisition, reports TechCrunch.
Basis is reported to be targeting a “sub-hundred million” dollar price target, which narrows down the list of potential suitors to deep-pockets firms such as those mentioned in the opening paragraph. Sources say if Basis can’t get anyone to bite for a purchase, they may possibly go for C funding.
Basis’ Health Tracker Watch could be attractive to Apple, as they are widely rumored to be working on an “iWatch” wearable device that is rumored to include health-monitoring functions. The Basis Health Tracker Watch includes sensors that track a wearer’s heart rate, motion, calorie expenditure, sleep cycle and changes in skin temperature and perspiration level.
Google is also said to be considering an entry in the wearables marketplace, though at this point not much is known about the device’s capabilities.
Microsoft and Samsung are also considered as possibilities. While Microsoft’s intentions are unknown, Samsung could be looking for tech of this type to add to a future version of their Galaxy Gear smartwatch.
