Apple CEO Tim Cook made a side trip on his way back from Ireland, as he spent some time meeting with UAE Vice-President and Prime Minister Shaikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum on Sunday. Cook also visited Apple Resellers in the region during his visit.
During the sit-down session, Shaikh Mohammed lauded Apple’s role in defining technology-driven education programs around the world, while Cook commended the UAE for its rollout of “e-government” programs, the Khaleej Times reported.
While details of the meeting remain unknown, some observers believe Apple may be in talks to supply the country with devices for educational initiatives. The deal would likely be similar to a rumored Turkish pact that could see a 13.1 million iPad four-year deal worth between $3 billion and $4 billion.
Cook also took the time to visit official Apple resellers in the region. While the total number of retailers visited is unknown, numerous employees form various stores have posted photos of themselves with Cook to Twitter.
Apple has no company owned stores in the Emirates, so Cook’s store tour has sparked rumors the company may be scouting locations for a future Apple Store.
