Apple to Build Second, Smaller ‘Tactical Datacenter’ at Maiden, NC Location

Permit filings came to light on Wednesday that reveal Apple is making plans to augment its existing 50,000 square-foot datacenter in Maiden, NC with a new, smaller “tactical” center that includes office space, meeting areas, and a break room.

AppleInsider:

According to a report by local publication The Hickory Daily Record, Apple’s new tactical datacenter will be 14,246 square feet and measure 25 feet tall, slightly smaller than a similar ancillary structure built over one year ago.

An erosion permit filed with the Catawba County planning office, revealed Apple’s plans. The datacenter plans reportedly show “banks of computers” with 11 cooling units. Another pair of A/C units will cool the office space and other work areas. Security will be handled by a “man trap” door.

While the costs for the new data center is unknown, the development will be smaller than the initial 21,030 square-foot datacenter already in place.

The Maiden datacenter contains servers for Apple’s iCloud and iTunes services, and is powered by a 5-megawatt biogas fuel cell installation, and a massive solar array.
