Report: Amazon Readying Its Apple TV Competitor for March Release

Amazon is reportedly readying a set-top streaming box to compete with Apple TV and Roku for a March release. Industry sources say the box will be powered by the Android operating system.

Re/code:

People I’ve talked to who are partnering with Amazon believe the company is aiming for a March rollout.

That won’t be a huge shock, since Amazon has been working on a box for much of last year. The company had planned on launching one in time for the Christmas shopping season, then shelved those plans.

The box is seen as a logical move for the online merchant, as it has continued to invest heavily in a Web video catalog, and has also started producing its own shows as well.

However, the device will be entering a highly-competitive field, which includes the Apple TV, Roku’s multiple set-top boxes, and Google’s recent entry, the Chromecast.

Re/code’s sources couldn’t confirm if the new Amazon box will have gaming capabilities. However, various reports earlier this month indicated that Amazon was building a gaming box.

As is normal in situations like this, Amazon reps declined to comment.
