If a report from the semi-reliable publication Digitimes is to be believed, Apple will finally start weaning off its reliance on Samsung for its A-series processors.
Samsung has signed a contract to produce 30% to 40% of Apple’s 14-nm A9 chip family in 2015, with the remainder of the production load being handled by other Apple supplier Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC), reports Digitimes.
Earlier this year came reports that while Apple had reportedly signed with Samsung to help produce A9 chips based on a 14-nanometer process, it was also reported that TSMC had signed with Apple to begin producing A-series chips in 2014.
Apple has reportedly been looking for ways to reduce its reliance on “frenemy” Samsung as a supplier for components for Apple’s devices. Apple has been unable to wean itself from the South Korean firm, as other companies have not proven to be reliable sources for the required technology.
Samsung is the manufacturer of the current A7 chip used in Apple’s iPhone 5s, iPad Air, and Retina iPad mini.
