Google Reported to be Working on Chrome Apps Toolkit for iOS

Google is reportedly preparing for a beta release of a toolkit to aid developers in creating native Chrome apps for mobile platforms such as iOS. The Next Web discovered evidence of the beta in a GitHub repository titled “Mobile Chrome Apps,”

According to the project’s description, Mobile Chrome Apps is a toolkit for porting Chrome Packaged Apps to Android and iOS hybrid web applications using Apache Cordova. Other operating systems are also mentioned, including Apple’s OS X and Microsoft’s Windows.

The project, led by Google software developer Michal Mocny, says in its description that it is a toolkit for porting Chrome Packaged Apps to Android and iOS hybrid web apps using Apache Cordova. The description also mentions other operating systems, including OS X and Windows.

At this time, iOS support is listed as “TBA,” but The Next Web reports work has started on the development of these “hybrid” apps.

Chrome Apps are written using HTML5, Javascript, and CSS, but behave like native apps and can run offline.

Google has offered no comment on the report.
