The Associated Press reports that Apple will launch iBeacon technology in all 254 of its retail stores today, alongside an over-the-air update to its Apple Store app that will support the iBeacon receivers.
The official move follows a report last month stating that iBeacon integration in Apple Stores would be enabled through an Apple Store app update, with the app now prompting users about receiving in-store notifications once opened.
The app also schools users with examples of which notifications will be pushed to the devices of in-store users via the iBeacon devices, such as messages about picking up orders, and in-store events.
Apple demonstrated the technology earlier this week in its flagship 24-hour Fifth Avenue store in New York City. Apple has installed approximately 20 iBeacon transmitters at the store. The transmitters use Bluetooth wireless technology to determine your exact location.
According to Apple’s official support page, iBeacon technology is compatible with Bluetooth capable iOS devices running iOS 7 including the iPhone 4S or later, iPad (3rd-generation) or later, iPad mini or later, and the iPod Touch (5th-generation) or later.
