Some Retina iPad minis Reportedly Experiencing Image Retention Issues

Hey, what’s an Apple product launch without an issue or two? It seems some Retina iPad minis are demonstrating image retention issues. This has been noted by Instapaper creator Marco Arment, who had developed a grid test to detect the problem when it was occurring in Retina MacBook Pros.

MacRumors:

Image retention was first cited as a potential issue last week, when a rumor suggested that burn-in on Sharp’s IGZO panels was causing production delays with the Retina mini’s display, leading to significant supply constraints that have resulted in a quiet release for the tablet.

Currently, it is unknown how many Retina iPad minis are experiencing the issue, however several Retina iPad mini owners on Twitter have reported the problem after running the grid test. It may be that the issue is limited to specific manufacturers, as many of the new tablets are not experiencing the issue.

Image retention problems with its displays is not a new issue for Apple, as the original Retina MacBook Pro had similar issues with its display.

The image retention test can be found at Marco Arment’s website.
