Most iPhone Owners Have No Idea Who Makes the Phone Case They Use

While Apple’s cases for their iPhone 5s and 5c have proven popular, it seems most iPhone owners have no idea who made their case.

AppleInsider:

The latest data from Consumer Intelligence Research Partners shows that 76 percent of iPhone buyers also own a case for their handset. Among those who have purchased Apple’s new iPhone 5s, 15 percent bought Apple’s official premium case, while 10 percent of iPhone 5c owners went with the company’s first-party accessory.

CIRP’s data makes a case for Apple’s success coming at the cost of Otterbox, maker of heavy-duty protective cases for the iPhone, and the largest third-party case maker. Otterbox accounted for more than 50% of all cases in use for the iPhone 4S, according to CIRP’s numbers, however their share of iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c cases amounted to just over 20% for each handset.

Interestingly enough, the largest percentage of iPhone 5s and 5c case owners have no idea who made the case they use. Almost half of all iPhone 5c owners, and 30% of iPhone 5s owners couldn’t say who made their case. A larger share in both instances than any case manufacturer had carved out for themselves.

The poll also found that cases are the most purchased accessory amongst iPhone users, beating screen protectors, car chargers, and bluetooth headsets.

CIRP surveyed 400 phone customers that had activated their iPhone in the U.S. after the launch of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c on September 20.
