While Apple’s new Retina display iPad mini continues to be in short supply, consumers who are looking for a silver 32 GB Wi-Fi Only model of the small tablet will have the best shot at snagging one in their local Apple Stores.
Data compiled by Cantor Fitzgerald’s Brian J. White and revealed in a Tuesday morning note to investors indicates that of the eight Wi-Fi-only models of Apple’s latest 7.9-inch tablet, the silver 32-gigabyte variant is the most abundant, showing availability in 72 percent of the 172 Apple retail stores polled.
The space gray model in the same capacity is available in 60% of stores. The least available variant of the popular device is the 128 GB models, which are said to be available in just 7% of locations.
The figures reflect the struggle Apple appears to be having in keeping up with demand for the new tablet. Last week, the device debuted “under the radar,” quietly launching with no fanfare. In-store orders at that time were reported to be limited to orders via Apple’s “Personal Pickup” program.
Apple CEO Tim Cook had previously been quoted as saying it was “unclear” whether the company would have enough of the smaller tablet for the crucial holiday quarter, while marketing chief Phil Schiller promised Apple was “working hard” to keep up with demand.
