We reported the rumor about Sony’s QX10 and QX100 “strap-on” camera lenses for use with iOS and Android devices awhile back. Now Sony has officially announced both lenses.
This system is more than just a lens. The QX10 and QX100 also pack an image sensor, thus allowing for much higher quality photographs. They simply clip onto a smartphone and communicate wirelessly.
The $250 QX10 sports a 1/2.3-inch 18-megapixel sensor paired with an f/3.3-5.9 lens. The $500 QX100 is equipped with a high-quality 1-inch 20.2-megapixel Exmor R sensor and a f/1.8-4.9 Carl Zeiss lens. Both are based on Sony’s point-and-shoot range of cameras, including the WX150 and the RX100m2.
Each lens clips onto a smart phone, and then connects with said device via Wi-Fi or NFC. Or, each can act like a wireless camera. They include microSD and Memory Stick slots, tripod mounts, and also include optional clips for the back of the phones. Your phone will act as the viewfinder, shutter trigger, and backup storage.
The $250 QX10 and $499 QX100 work with both Android and iOS phones, and should be available for sale by the end of September.
