The Apple TV didn’t get any love at the Apple event yesterday, but that doesn’t mean it’s fallen completely from grace. Quoting “people familiar” with Apple’s plans, AllThingsD says the little black set-top box will most likely get a software refresh on September 18th, the day iOS 7 drops to the public.
The one new feature I’m aware of is a tweak to Apple’s AirPlay system. I didn’t do a great job of explaining this before, so here’s another stab: The new software will allow people who have purchased content from Apple’s iTunes store to play that stuff on other people’s TVs, via its AirPlay system.
So you’ll be able to stream the stuff you own on your Apple TV directly to your buddy’s black box, directly from the cloud. No more downloading it to your iPhone or iPad, and then AirPlaying it from there.
We’ll keep you posted as we hear of any other new features the update may have.
