Back in 2011, when iCloud took the place of MobilMe in user’s hearts everywhere, Apple slipped a little something extra to paying MobilMe customers by giving them an additional 20GB of iCloud storage to thank them for being paying customers.
While that freebie was supposed to come to an end in September of 2012, Apple did a Santa Claus and popped for another year of free storage. Now, Apple has sent emails to affected customers letting them know that the free ride is coming to an end on September 30th.
For customers using more than 5GB of storage, they will be required to purchase a 20GB storage upgrade for $40 per year, or a number of iCloud features — iCloud Backup, Documents in the Cloud, and iCloud Mail — will stop working on the 30th until the issue is resolved.
Apple warns users if the storage they’re using in iCloud exceeds the total storage available after the downgrade, iCloud Backup, Documents in the Cloud, and iCloud Mail will temporarily stop working. In order to resume using these features, users can either reduce the amount of iCloud storage they’re using, or purchase a storage plan with a larger amount of storage than they’re currently using.
