The App Store Was EA’s Biggest Retail Partner for June Quarter

Electronic Arts (EA), the third-largest gaming company in the world, announced that for the first time ever, it gained more revenue through Apple than through any other single partner.

All-told, the company’s mobile and tablet revenue hit $90 million last quarter, representing 18 percent of its overall takings. Digital revenue in general grew to $378 million, meaning less than a quarter of EA’s $495 total revenue came from traditional sales. The company highlighted mobile game The Simpsons: Tapped Out as a top performer.

EA has made a heavy investment in mobile gaming. The company purchased American developer PopCap, known for its Bejeweled and Plants vs. Zombies games, in 2011 for $750 million.

EA Chief Operating Officer Peter Moore revealed that Apple was EA’s biggest retail partner, as measured by sales, for the first time ever in the June quarter. Title’s that are reported to have performed particularly well for the company include The Simpsons: Tapped OutReal Racing 3, and The Sims Freeplay.

Overall, EA made $90 million from the mobile gaming market The company did not break down how much of that came from specific platforms.
