Last month, reports began emerging that Twitter is planning to launch a new music streaming and discovery service – and now those reports are proving to be accurate, thanks to confirmation from Twitter themselves! As The Verge notes, the company has now confirmed their acquisition of music discovery site We Are Hunted, and has launched a new website stating that the Twitter Music service is “coming soon.”
The app is initially being tested among celebrities with large Twitter followings, such as Ryan Seacrest, who tweeted about the app last night. Twitter Music reportedly aims to offer song and artist recommendations for users based on clues from their Twitter feed, and will feature the ability to stream songs using services such as SoundCloud and iTunes.
Twitter has even launched an official website for the new music, teasing that the service is “Coming Soon.” Twitter will reportedly begin rolling the service out to the masses in about a week. AllThingsD has a few details about how the app will work:
The app suggests artists and tracks to users based on a number of personalized signals, including the Twitter accounts a user follows on the microblogging service. Users will be able to listen to clips of music from inside the app, using third-party services like iTunes and SoundCloud; they will also be able to watch music videos provided by Vevo, the music video service owned by Universal Music and Sony.
Earlier today, Twitter acknowledged that it had acquired music recommendation service We Are Hunted last year and put its staff to work building the new app.
We hope to get a good look at the app in person when it launches in about a week. Will you use Twitter’s new music service?
