Sailfish is an extremely interesting project. At MWC 2013, I was lucky enough to be in attendance at a talk given by Jolla CEO Marc Dillon, who is responsible for Sailfish. For those unfamiliar, Sailfish is an open mobile OS, based off MeeGo, an old discontinued mobile OS from Nokia. However it also builds in Android compatibility, and can run Linux software.
It’s still in its very early stages, however it will be fascinating to see whether it will be able to establish itself as a leading mobile OS. For now though, Sailfish has released its SDK for Mac, which should hopefully allow many apps to be created and run natively on the OS.
Sailfish has got a huge amount of potential, considering the number of apps that are already compatible, however developing native apps will be key to its success. Hopefully the release of the SDK on Mac (Windows and Linux as well) will inspire iOS developers to start porting their apps to Sailfish. To find out more about it, click here.
