Apple has introduced a new configuration option for its 21.5-inch and 27-inch iMacs, now offering a VESA mount adapter instead of the standard pedestal. The $40 option must be configured at the time of purchase, and allows users to mounts their iMacs to walls or other vertical surfaces. Until now, no VESA mounting option existed for the new iMacs.
We previously received confirmation about this in the form of a letter from Apple to a Danish Apple reseller (translated below, via MacTrast reader Thipan A.), but found the idea so senseless that we opted not to post it when we received the tip back in December.
“VESA mount adapter (for wall mounting the unit)The new iMacs use a new system to support VESA mounting. For VESA mounting support it is necessary to order the new iMac VESA mount as CTO.Note that when the computer is supplied with a VESA mount the mount cannot be dismantled, and the customer will not get the separate stand along with the computer with VESA mount.Previously, only the 27 ” iMac supported VESA mounting but on the new iMacs VESA mounting is supported on both models (sizes), i.e. VESA mounting also supports the 21.5″ model.But remember VESA = CTO”

The iMac with Built-in VESA Mount Adapter is ready to pair with your favorite VESA-compatible wall mount, desk mount, or articulating arm (sold separately). This iMac doesn’t include a stand, so a mount is required. If you don’t already have a mount, you can purchase one when you configure your iMac.
Shipping estimates for the VESA-equipped iMacs are showing as 7-10 business days on the Apple website. iMacs without that VESA mount currently show immediate availability.
What a senseless decision on Apple’s part. While it’s nice to see VESA as an option on the new iMacs now, it’s disappointing that it requires the purchase of a whole new machine – which is just fantastic for those who have already purchased a new iMac, not expecting that Apple crippled the devices by removing the ability to add a VESA adapter, as with previous models.
I can hardly believe that it took Apple several months to make this available as an option. Apple’s horrific lack of foresight once again comes at the cost of the user. And don’t forget – if you do order an iMac with the new VESA option, it’s a permanent decision. There’s no way to change your mind and add a pedestal stand later. How extraordinarily disappointing.
