Popular photo-sharing service Instagram hit a major milestone today, surpassing 100 million active monthly users just over two years after launching. The company, which was purchased by Facebook in September of last year, announced the news today on their blog:
Instagram co-founder Kevin Systrom:
Now, nearly two and a half years later, over 100 million people use Instagram every month. It’s easy to see this as an accomplishment for a company, but I think the truth is that it’s an accomplishment for our community. Now, more than ever, people are capturing the world in real-time using Instagram—sharing images from the farthest corners of the globe. What we see as a result is a world more connected and understood through photographs.
The news follows an announcement about a month ago that the service had hit 90 million users, meaning that those last 10 million users came on board pretty darn fast – despite facing a privacy controversy due to Facebook’s privacy-crushing new terms of service. Congrats, Instagram – 100 million users, and still going strong!
Instagram is available as a free download from the App Store.
