Outside of technology, the one thing Apple has been linked with a lot over the years is cars. What an iCar would look like, and would they do it are two common questions. The Tesla S has been dubbed the ‘Macintosh’ of cars, and with its revolutionary potential, it’s easy to see why, Technology Tell reports.
In case you don’t know what Tesla is, it’s an electric car that was developed a few years back based off a Lotus, but now it’s actually making its own distinct cars, with CEO Elon Musk at the helm.
The Tesla S has already won the Motortrend 2013 Car Of The Year Award, and some have even wondered if Musk the Steve Jobs of the car industry. Tesla S reservations are currently sold out, it looks like it’s going to be incredibly popular alongside the Model X, which launches in 2014. It’s hard to ignore the fact that the Tesla S could easily revolutionize the auto industry, similar to how the Macintosh revolutionized computing.
Tesla Motors founder Elon Musk (and the designer of the Tesla S) even refers to the Model S as his “Macintosh,” and notes that the vehicle has some very Apple-like design characteristic – every details has been given the sort of extraordinary attention that you rarely see in vehicle design (or design in general) – and all this to make the Tesla Model S as distinctive as possible.
It’s also no slouch in terms of performance:
A fast car, too, beating a 540 horsepower V8 BMW M5 in a drag race to 100 miles per hour staged by Automobile’s Ezra Dyer, and managing 0-60 in 4.3 seconds. “Silly quick,” Dyer commented. Both magazines praised the Tesla Model S’s superb handling on both road and race course, its driving feel, attractive styling, standard of finish, comfort, practicality, and reasonable price for what you get.
I think if you’re looking for a cleaner version of a car with Mercedes reliability, then the Tesla could be for you. It uses no gas, only electricity, and seems to have decent range. You’ll have to wait a while, though.
