Apple has already passed Microsoft in profitability and revenues, now the company is nearing another milestone; besting Windows in terms of global personal computing unit share.
Apple’s share of conventional PC device sales is now over 20 percent, thanks to the rapid adoption of iPad.
The number of personal computing devices sold by Apple have now hit a quarterly record total just shy of 80 million units: 75 million iOS devices and 4.1 million Macs. The comparison between Apple’s devices and the worldwide Windows PC sales was graphed out by Benedict Evans, as seen above.
Global sales of PCs (this includes the Mac), are remaining flat at around 90 million per quarter. So, Apple’s personal computing sales are now approaching 90% of Windows PC sales.
While the Mac found it difficult to break into the enterprise, the iPhone and iPad have been enthusiastically embraced by corporations and government agencies. This has softened the opposition to Windows alternatives on the desktop, opening a door for the Mac to enter through.
