Apple is making a new effort to promote independent authors in a new section of its iBookstore called “Breakout Books.” Apple says all of the books listed are independently published to the bookstore, and have received high markings from readers who have purchased the books.
They’re grouped in three broad genres at the moment (romance, sci-fi / fantasy, and mysteries / thrillers) with a fourth catch-all “more to explore” section as well. Many of the books are quite inexpensive, and a surprising amount are free, so there’s definitely less of a financial risk to try these offerings out.
The page isn’t filled to the gills with options quite yet, but Apple says they’ll continue to add books as they “begin taking off.”
If you have a taste for independent authors, and not just the biggies that keep showing up on the top ten lists, this could be for you.
