THX, the company who sets the standard for high-fidelity audio/visual reproduction for movie theaters and consumer products, has released a new iOS app called THX tune-up.
The app is built to help consumers calibrate, or ‘get the most out of,’ their HDTVs and home theater setups. And with the Super Bowl less than a week away, its timing couldn’t be better…
You can connect the app to your TV using either of two methods. The first, especially nice for Apple TV owners, is through AirPlay mirroring. The second option is to use an HDMI adapter.
The app uses custom video test patterns, carefully selected photos and tutorials to help you adjust and confirm the best picture settings on your display based on your room lighting. In addition, by using special test sounds, THX tune-up also lets you check your external speakers to make sure they are working properly for 2-channel stereo or 5.1 surround sound systems.
The app also allows you to play THX-certified trailers over your newly-calibrated TV and surround sound system, as well as lets you play the gonad-vibrating THX “Deep Note” you’ve probably heard in your local theater.
I haven’t tried the app yet, but I’ll report back what I think of it when i do get a chance to try it out. I have a new 47″ LED TV, and a 5.1 home theater system I can’t wait to get “calibrated.”
Be sure to check the app out for yourself. It’s free during its introduction, but it will return to its normal price of $1.99 in one week.
THX tune-up is available FREE (Jumps to $1.99 in one week) in the App Store, and works with the iPhone and iPad. [DIRECT LINK]
