Japan’s NTT DoCoMo Wants the iPhone

NTT DoCoMo, the #1 wireless carrier in Japan, said on Friday that it would be willing to carry the iPhone if a mutually beneficial agreement can be reached between the two companies.

AppleInsider:

The president of NTT DoCoMo, Katoru Katō, said his company would be willing to add the iPhone to its existing lineup if the telecom can reach a mutually beneficial arrangement with Apple, reports the Nikkan Kogyo Shimbun (via Brightwire).

The carrier lost over 40,000 subscribers in November as its rivals grabbed customers by offering the iPhone 5. The drop was the first for the company in over five years, its biggest decline ever.

Also, the Telecommunications Carriers Association announced that rival SoftBank grabbed the most subscribers in December, signing up a total of 274,700 new bodies. The telecom, which got started in the Japanese mobile industry after taking over Vodafone’s Japanese business, recently bought a controlling interest in U.S. carrier Sprint.

DoCoMo had 61 million cellular subscriptions, almost half of Japan’s entire population, as of December 2012.
