Haul Of Fake Lighting Cables Seized In Alaska Tops $635K

Despite Apple’s attempts to restrict knockoff Lightning cables, by amongst other things using a special encrypted chip, counterfeit versions are still coming out thick and fast. Alaska Dispatch reports (via 9to5Mac) that over $635,000 worth of fake Lightning cables and accessories, which had arrived via plane from China, were seized in Anchorage.

The cables featured Apple logos, but easily stood out as counterfeits due to the cardboard blister pack packaging and the poor build quality.

US Customs and Border Protection spokesman Frank Falcon said that it was unclear whether they even worked and that $600,000 worth in cables and adaptors was ‘quite a bit of stuff’.

The Lighting cables and accessories will all be destroyed.

The popularity of iOS devices has lead to millions of dollars worth of fake accessories entering the US, including Smart Covers and even fake iPhone 5’s. So it’s a good idea to check anytime you buy any Apple accessory online that it’s the real thing.
