POP, the multi-connector charger Kickstarter project that was in serious peril because of Apple’s rules about not allowing Lightning and 30-Pin connectors in authorized accessories, is now back among the living after Apple revised it’s rules.
POP email to backers, via AppleInsider:
As you know on Thursday we sent you an update that because of Apple’s rules around Lightning we would be canceling POP. The story got A LOT of news and reactions, way more than we could have ever imagined. In fact it became such big news that 24 hours after we posted Apple changed their guidelines for Lightning.
It was an incredible turn of events for us. We never could have imagined that we would be able to change Apple’s rules.
With the change to Apple’s regulations, POP can now be made the way the company had promised, and the project is back on. The company says they will not be processing refunds, and will be “going full speed ahead,” to produce and deliver the product as soon as possible.
Apple’s strict rules for Made for iPhone, iPad and iPod devices had all but killed the project, which had raised nearly $140,000 from the crowd-funding website. After receiving considerable coverage in the press, and after users expressed their frustration over Apple’s MFi rules, the company changed course and revised its guidelines. The new rules now state that manufacturers can build accessories with the Lightning connector, in conjunction with the 30-pin legacy connector.
Initially, Siminoff said he would not be resurrecting the project, and would be refunding all funds to customers. Luckily, he seems to have had a change of heart, as he sent out the email on Monday announcing the project was once more back on.
