Apple has started construction on the $68 million first phase of its data center in Prineville, Oregon. This phase will involve construction of the first of two 338,000 sq. ft. buildings.
The price tag covers the cost of one building and two “data halls” inside. Plans filed with the city and Crook County last summer call for adding a second building and, eventually, 14 more data halls.
To give you an idea of the size of the project, each building is more than twice the size of a typical Costco store. (Via The Oregonian.)
The property has space for additional buildings, identified in planning documents in two sections marked “Future Development Area.”
Apple paid $5.6 million in February to buy 160 acres from Crook County, and immediately opened a 10,000 sq. ft. modular center at the site to establish a presence there. Now with the permanent construction underway, the company’s long-term vision has started to play-out.
Apple has been in data center capacity expansion mode, with the Prineville facility currently under construction, a massive new facility in Maiden, North Carolina, and a recently announced data center outside of Reno, Nevada.
