“Run, run, fast as you can! Can’t catch me, I’m the gingerbread man!” I’m pretty sure everyone has heard that rhyme. Now you get the chance to BE the Gingerbread Man. Is it everything you dreamed it would be? Let’s take a look at Ginger Run, a fun little game from Oleg Kapitonov.
The idea behind Ginger Run is deceptively simple, yet engagingly clever. You are the Gingerbread Man, and you’re in a foot race. Using an inventive set of tap and swipe controls, you run as long and as fast as you can and leave the other competitors behind. As you run, you can collect bonuses, powerups, and pass your slower competitors.
The control system is simple, yet will take you just a little while to master. It’s all in the timing. To run, simply tap each side of the screen. To move your left foot, tap the left side. Right foot? Yup, the right side of the screen. The secret is in the timing. You have to learn the best rhythm to move you feet fast enough to run the foot race as fast as you can. It takes awhile to get into the rhythm, but once you do, it feels natural. Jumping is easy as pie, (sorry, easy as cookie just didn’t sound right), simply swipe “up” on the screen with your finger.
In addition to the simple controls, players will love the colorful, and well done environment. The player runs along a kitchen counter space, which adds to the immersion of some of the items you’ll need to collect, and the obstacles you’ll have to avoid.
The music and sound effects in the game are entertaining and adds to the enjoyment of the game.
The scenarios and levels are well done, and engagingly entertaining. Players will enjoy the fact they can compete worldwide on a global leaderboard, and also help their country compete with other countries in an Olympic type competition between countries. (The game asks you to select your country when naming your Gingerbread Man.)
I’d recommend Ginger Run to anyone who wants a game that can act as a “kill 5 minutes waiting in line” type game, or a game that you can sit down with for an extended gaming session.
The controls are simple, yet take awhile to properly master. The game’s graphics are eye catching, and well done. The music adds to the engaging aspects of the game.
The game is suitable for all levels, children will find it simple enough to easily learn, and will enjoy the theme of the game. Adults will like the more challenging aspects of the game, and if they’re like I am, will enjoy making their little Ginger competitor run as fast as he can.
