AT&T: iPhone 5 Buyers Can Keep Their Unlimited Data Plans

Word comes from AT&T today that those intrepid iPhone users who have been able to hang on to their unlimited data plan, lo these many years, can rest easy. The Death Star carrier says you’ll be able to keep your grandfathered in plan, even if you upgrade to a new iPhone via subsidized pricing.

AT&T’s Ralph de la Vega on the iPhone 5 and the upgrade process:

“We offer customers the flexibility to keep the iPhone data plans they already have or choose any of our individual or new Mobile Share plans. We’re proud that more customers choose AT&T for iPhone than any other U.S. carrier and look forward to making iPhone 5 the newest addition to our lineup.”

Looks like those of us who have held on to their unlimited data plans over the years can breathe easy for another round of upgrades. Yeah, “unlimited” really means “up to 5GB before we throttle you until the next billing period starts,” but look at it this way, you’ll be getting throttled at 5GB instead of 3GB, and we basically get a free speed upgrade to 4G LTE. Winner, winner, chicken dinner!

Of course, you can’t use FaceTime over 4G unless you change to one of AT&T’s shared plans, so there’s that.
