Apple’s iPhone 5 has once again shattered all-time sales records, with Apple announcing that over 5 million units were sold through opening weekend (including pre-orders). The company also announced that over 100 million users upgraded to iOS 6 since it was released last Wednesday.
“Demand for iPhone 5 has been incredible and we are working hard to get an iPhone 5 into the hands of every customer who wants one as quickly as possible,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO. “While we have sold out of our initial supply, stores continue to receive iPhone 5 shipments regularly and customers can continue to order online and receive an estimated delivery date. We appreciate everyone’s patience and are working hard to build enough iPhone 5s for everyone.”
Investors initially expressed disappointment over the sales figures, as initial estimates had predicted up to 10 million sales. It’s important to note, however, that many “still in-transit” pre-orders were not included in the figure, as MacRumors reports:
[ISI Group analyst Brian] Marshall notes that many of those first-day pre-orders, as well as ones made after that date, have yet to be delivered, and thus Apple can not yet count them as sold.
That would make a significant impact on sales numbers. It’s also thought that limited supply had aan impact on overall launch sales of the iPhone 5. At any rate, sales of 5 million units (a new all-time sales record) in such a short time is hardly a disappointment!
