Tapbots, developers of the popular Tweetbot third-party Twitter apps, have announced that they will be closing the public alpha of Tweetbot for Mac. The closure is due to Twitter’s new rules on how many people can be authorized to use any application at any one time.

Twitter’s latest API Changes means now we have a large but finite limit on the number of user tokens we can get for Tweetbot for Mac. We’ve been working with Twitter over the last few days to try to work around this limit for the duration of the beta but have been unable to come up with a solution that was acceptable to them. Because of this we’ve decided its best for us to pull the alpha. […]
…continuing the public alpha/beta would be problematic. Someone might use the app, decide they don’t like it and the token would be gone forever.
While the Tweetbot Alpha will no longer be available for download from the Tapbots website, the company still plans to release a finished version of Tweebot for Mac, although they have been unable to work with Twitter of raising their user cap for the alpha. Those who already have the Tweetbot for Mac alpha may continue to use it.
Twitter announced a number of controversial API changes earlier this month, placing strict limits on the number of users third-party apps can have, and restricting developers’ ability to implement Twitter’s features into their apps.
Tweetbot for iPhone and Tweetbot for iPad also continue to remain available for download from the App Store.
