iOS 6 Automatically Scales to Fit Taller Next-Gen iPhone Display

We’ve all no doubt heard by now that Apple’s next iPhone is likely to have a taller 4-inch display – something which has been backed by numerous credible sources in the past weeks. A new discovery in the latest beta of iOS 6, however, practically confirms the matter.

9to5Mac has discovered that iOS 6 automatically scales itself to account for a taller 1136×640 display by adding a fifth row of icons to the homescreen, while iOS 5.1 simply makes each row slightly taller. This gives us the best confirmation to date not only for the idea that Apple will move to a taller display, but how they will handle the extra space.

The discovery was made by tweaking the iOS Simulator app included in the latest developer preview of Xcode 4.5, running the OS at the taller resolution. Needless to say, it’s a pretty interesting result – and likely to reflect what Apple shows us at their widely expected media event on September 12!

Besides the taller screen, Apple’s next iPhone is rumored to feature a thinner design and a two-tone metal rear casing, as well as a smaller dock connector, relocated FaceTime camera, smaller nano-SIM card, and LTE support.
