Google and Samsung are working on a software patch that they believe will avoid infringing the Apple patent that lead to the sales ban of the Galaxy Nexus. Google says that patch is expected to be pushed out soon.
The move follows a decision on Tuesday by District Court Judge Lucy Koh not to hold off while Samsung pursues its appeal of the ban. Koh ruled Friday that the Galaxy Nexus is likely to infringe on four Apple patents, but issued the injunction based specifically on a patent related to universal search.
The software update will be rolled out to all Galaxy Nexus devices in the United States regardless of carrier. It will reduce the capabilities of the search bar on the home screen, limiting the results to just those from the Web. Anything on the device, including apps, emails, music, and so on will not appear in the results from the search bar, voice search will also be confined to Web results.
Google will support Sumsung in its appeal of the injunction, as well as to challenge the issue of the universal search patent in the case.
Google and Samsung are expected to challenge the validity of the patent, arguing that universal search predates the Apple patent.
