Despite only selling a few models of the iPhone and iPad each year, Apple owns the lion’s share of profits in the smartphone marketplace. All the while, they’re up against manufacturers who release dozens of different smartphones and tablets every year.
This great chart from market research firm VisionMobile, (via Cult of Mac), compares shipping volumes, revenues and profits of the mobile industry from Q1 2011 to Q1 2012. In just one year, Apple has almost doubled not just the number of smartphones it ships, but the revenue and profit it makes off of them. Companies that were struggling to compete have almost gone belly up.
