Retina MacBook Pro Capable of Running Three Simultaneous External Displays

The new Retina MacBook Pro apparently has one neat and powerful feature that Apple didn’t mention. According to a blog post at Other World Computing (via MacRumors), the device is capable of powering an impressive 4 displays at the same time (counting the built-in Retina display).

OWC:

Including the built-in Retina display, the new 2012 MacBook Pro 15″ can run four displays at their native resolution.

  1. Retina on laptop @ “best for Retina”
  2. iMac used as a display @ 2560 x 1440 via Thunderbolt
  3. iMac used as a display @ 2560 x 1440 via Thunderbolt/DisplayPort
  4. LG monitor @ 1920 x 1200  via HDMI

What’s especially impressive is that all 4 displays cab be showing video at the same time without any noticeable lag. Better still: If the new Retina MacBook Pro is capable of powering 4 displays, the 15-inch 2012 non-Retina MacBook Pro should be able to as well (at least the 2.6ghz model with 1GB graphics chip).

That’s a serious chunk of screen real estate! Now, if only I had two more Thunderbolt displays…
