In a world where the iPad reigns supreme over the tablet industry, there has been no shortage of companies that try to knock the iPad off its pedestal. The latest company to take up the mantle of would-be iPad killer is none other than Apple’s oldest opponent: Microsoft.
The Giant of Redmond has scheduled an event on June 18 in Los Angeles, where, according to a number of sources (including AllThingsD and The Wrap), Microsoft is planning to pull the wraps off of their very own tablet. Not Windows 8 – but an actual tablet! It’s not very often that Microsoft delves into the hardware business (the Xbox is the exception). As such, it will be extremely interesting to see what they come up with – if the rumors are indeed true, that is.
Microsoft has dabbled around in tablets before, back when there was no tablet market to speak of. But ever since the company shuttered its Courier project, and fell flat on its face when it partnered with HP on the Slate Windows tablet shortly after the original iPad was released, Microsoft has been silent in response to Apple’s superstar device. Perhaps they’ve been planning something all along?
I’m reminded somewhat of the Zune – an all-around decent portable media player that ultimately met its doom by entering a market already dominated by the iPod. So what’s Microsoft’s game plan this time around? Are they just playing yet another round of “Me too!”?
I’m as curious as anyone else at this point. We’ll keep you informed of any notable updates that we hear!
