I love Drobo’s excellent backup solutions, and I have for some time, but in a world where speed means everything, I’ve found myself considering upgrading to Thunderbolt-enabled storage solutions. Of course, that would mean sacrificing the Drobo. Fortunately, that’s about to change!
Drobo issued a press release earlier today announcing that they are preparing to release Thunderbolt-enabled storage solutions with support for both Macs and PCs. And although the setup is certain to come at a significant cost, the ability to run file transfers at up to 20 times the speed of current Drobo units will make it well worth the investment to many users.
Fron the Drobo Thunderbolt info page:
You’ve been patient and your wait is almost over. Thunderbolt-powered Drobo arrays are being previewed the week of June 4 with Intel at Computex in Taiwan and throughout the month of June at the Adobe Creative Suite 6 Roadshow events.
Combining Thunderbolt performance with Drobo ease of use and expansion will change the way people think of Drobo and – more importantly – change the way people use Drobo to protect their digital lives. With the potential to provide a 10x increase in performance, Thunderbolt is a game-changing technology that will allow people to use Drobo in ways they’ve never imagined before.
Besides the Thunderbolt support, Drobo will also be adding support for solid state drives, as well as “several industry-first technologies that will definitely be worth the wait.” Additional details are expected to become available later this month, as we’ll let you know as soon as we hear more!
