Pod2g Achieves Untethered iOS 5.1 Jailbreak on New iPad

iOS hacker and jailbreak expert pod2g just announced through Twitter that he has successfully performed an untethered iOS 5.1 jailbreak on the new 3rd-gen iPad.  The news comes just 1 week after he performed a similar jailbreak on an iPhone 4.

Pod2g seems to be making a lot of progress on the untethered iOS 5.1 jailbreak. Now that he has demoed the jailbreak on both an iPhone 4 and a new iPad, it’s safe to say that his jailbreak will work on all iOS devices, as those two devices represent both the A4 and A5 chips that are in current iOS devices.

While iOS hacker i0n1c has already demoed an untethered jailbreak on the iPad 3 running iOS 5.1.1, i0n1c isn’t actively working with the jailbreak community. As such, pod2g’s progress is a better indication of when a public iOS 5.12 untethered jailbreak might actually be released.

There is still work to be done to prepare an exploit for public release, however. He still hasn’t tested the jailbreak on iOS 5.1.1, and the present version of his exploit isn’t yet stable enough to release to the public. He may also wait until Apple releases iOS 6 to release a public tool.
