It’s already quite clear that the iPad is dominating the tablet industry, but it may be choking out another industry as well: Netbooks. According to the latest data from market research firm Canalys (via CultofMac), tablet shipments have increased 200% year over year while netbook sales continue to fall.
While Apple selling iPads as fast as they can be produced, netbook shipments have fallen another 34% from this time last year. But the casualties in the battle against the iPad don’t end at netbooks. According to Canalys, tablets are slowly drowning out the PC industry as a whole!
If you look at the U.S., pads are approaching 40 % of all client PC shipments. The pad proposition for U.S. consumers is very strong, thanks to the wider choice in content and apps.
Canalys also points out, however, that the growing popularity of ultra-thin devices like the MacBook Air and devices based on Intel’s Ultrabook specs may help balance out the PC industry against the growing influence of tablets.
