Most users don’t use optical disks much these days, or at all, meaning that your Superdrive is just wasting space in your MacBook. Wouldn’t it be great if you could put that space to better use? Good news – you can!
Several companies (such as Hard Wrk as well as iFixit and Protronix) have come up with various caddies that allow you to swap your optical drive for a second hard drive or an SSD, which could make that dead Superdrive space a bit more handy!
And while you might think that you lose the optical drive if you do this, you couldn’t be more wrong. Many of these caddies come with a USB enclosure for your current optical drive (Hard Wrk includes one with the purchase price). These enclosures are also widely available even if your caddy doesn’t come bundled with one.
If you configure everything just right (by installing dual SSDs in RAID, for instance), you could own one of the fastest MacBooks on the planet – and for the price, it seems like a good deal.
So if any of you out there have a desperate need for speed and have already maxed out the RAM (or if you just want more storage space), this is definitely the way to go.
