With the LTE iPad now available, the rumors of a 4G iPhone are now beginning to roll. Mentions of LTE in iOS code strings were published before the introduction of the new iPad, but no one was sure if that was for the 4G iPad, the iPhone, or both.
Jordan Kahn for 9to5Mac:
Today, code strings in iOS 5.1 discovered by Cydia developer Krishna Sagar (via iDownloadBlog) contain the text: “Enabling 4G will end your phone call. Are you sure you want to enable 4G?” It also has various other mentions of enabling and disabling 4G when on phone calls and FaceTime. While most of the references to 4G in the strings could be for the iPad, references to calling features is pretty solid evidence that Apple is at the very least testing a LTE iPhone.
AT&T has recently been calling its HSPA+ service 4G on the iPhone 4S, but turning it off or on wouldn’t disable a phone call or a FaceTime chat.
9to5Mac also list a full reference to FaceTime over 4G in the code strings :
“4G_ON_CALL_CANCEL” = “Cancel”;
“4G_ON_CALL_OK_DISABLE” = “Disable”;
“4G_ON_CALL_OK_ENABLE” = “Enable”;
“4G_ON_CALL_WARNING_DISABLE” = “Disabling 4G will end your phone call. Are you sure you want to disable 4G?”;
“4G_ON_CALL_WARNING_ENABLE” = “Enabling 4G will end your phone call. Are you sure you want to enable 4G?”;
“4G_ON_FACETIME_4G_WARNING_DISABLE” = “Disabling 4G will end FaceTime. Are you sure you want to disable 4G?”;
“4G_ON_FACETIME_WIFI_WARNING_DISABLE” = “Disabling 4G may end FaceTime. Are you sure you want to disable 4G?”;
“4G_TEXT” = “Using 4G loads data faster, but may decrease battery life.”;
This report, and our earlier one from today about the rumor of a larger screen on the next iPhone, shows the next iPhone rumor season is getting into full swing. MacTrast will continue to report rumors and discoveries as we hear about them.
