AMD Exits Processor Manufacturing Business

AMD haS announced an end to their processor manufacturing business, even though they will continue to design the chips, MacGeneration reports. In 2009, AMD outsourced the production process to GlobalFoundries (GF). Over time their share in GF went from 50% down to 8.8%, before today announcing that they had sold it off completely.

Even though Apple never used AMD’s processors in any of their devices, it was reportedly a close run thing between them and Intel, Apple only choosing the latter due to production yield problems for AMD.

AMD has struggled in recent years in the processor war against Intel, and their exit from chip production reflects this, despite the fact that they will continue to design them.
