Among the many exciting new features of Apple’s forthcoming OS X Mountain Lion is iOS-like native Twitter integration. But what about Facebook? Or Ping, Apple’s own attempt at a social platform? If anything is clear about OS X Mountain Lion (or iOS for that matter), it’s that Apple is putting all of their social media eggs into one tweeting basket.
From Apple’s description of Mountain Lion’s Twitter integration:
Tweet right from your apps. OS X Mountain Lion keeps you on top of all things Twitter. Sign in once and you’re all set to start tweeting — and you don’t have to leave the app you’re in. Tweet links and photos directly from Safari, iPhoto, or Photo Booth with the new Tweet Sheet. Tweet comments and add locations. And when someone mentions you in a tweet or sends you a direct message, you’ll get a Twitter notification right then and there.
It seems to me that Twitter is just more effective as a news source, and as a quick and efficient way to keep up to date with friends, family, and news. Gleaning as much information from Facebook would be a much more involved process, and take a great deal more time.
As Cult of Mac points out, Apple’s inclusion of Twitter integration with Mountain Lion makes Twitter the first social network ever to be sewn directly into the fabric of a desktop operating system.
Sorry, Facebook, but the cards aren’t playing out in your favor this time around, and with a company as large as Apple backing your biggest competitor, I’d say you have quite an uphill struggle ahead of you.
