During Apple’s Q1 2012 financial results conference call yesterday, CEO Tim Cook revealed that the Apple TV was actually doing well, having sold 2.8 million devices last year, with 1.4 million sold in just the last quarter. Nevertheless, Cook reiterated that the Apple TV is still just a hobby – but one which he can’t live without!
Our Apple TV product is doing quite well… but in the scheme of things, we still classify Apple TV as a hobby. We continue to add things to it. If you’re using the latest one — I don’t know about you, but I can’t live without it.
I don’t know about you, but with sales numbers like that, and with the Apple TV now allowing for wireless mirroring with the iPad 2 and iPhone 4S, the Apple TV really doesn’t seem like just a hobby anymore, especially considering Google’s relative failure in the set-top box market.
Perhaps Cook is just downplaying the importance of the Apple TV until Apple’s fabled “iTV” Siri-powered television hits the market?
