Exactly one year ago today, Apple launched the Mac App Store alongside Mac OS X 10.6.6 with an initial offering about about 1,000 apps. The Mac App Store has thrived ever since its release, and has already seen over 100 million downloads. Happy birthday, Mac App Store!
The Mac App Store marked Apple’s continuing push away from retail boxed software – a move that was made quite clear with the Mac App Store only release of OS X 10.7 Lion.
It’s been an extremely successful first year for the Mac App Store, and even though competitors have created their own alternatives, like Amazon’s Mac download store and Windows 8’s upcoming download store, the Mac App Store remains very much on top. In fact, Apple is now the largest PC software distributor in the U.S.!
