Steve Jobs has been snubbed for TIME’s Person of the Year award, with it instead going to “The Protester” after the Arab Spring. It was rumored that Jobs might be up for the award, and would have become the first ever person to receive the award posthumously.
A panel of TIME magazine experts had spoken about nominating Jobs back in November, with panelist Brian Williams stating that:
Not only did he change the world, but he gave us that spirit again that something was possible, that you could look at a piece of glass or plastic and move your finger, that’s outlandish… may he rest in peace.”
Another panelist, Mario Batali, concurred with Williams:
“I’m definitely a part of the fact and the belief that smartphones, the cell phone with photographic capability, has changed the world as much as the Bible has”
The Protestor succeeds Mark Zuckerberg and Ben Bernanke, who received the award in 2009. It’s a bit surprising that Jobs has never received the award, even though “the computer” did receive it back in 1982.
