Rumor: Apple to Launch Retina Display Macbook Pro in 2012

With the general expectation being that the next-gen iPad will feature a Retina display, it is somewhat surprising to see that, according to DigiTimes (via MacRumors), Apple may also be launching a Retina Macbook Pro in 2012.

The display would have a pretty incredible resolution of 2,880 by 1,800 pixels, which is twice what the current Macbook Pro currently has. This rumor is partially supported by an Intel announcement in September, revealing that their Ivy Bridge processors would support a 4K display resolution.

It would also appear that Apple has solved the previous problems they had with regard to transferring the Retina display from a smaller screen to a bigger one. This is encouraging, and it would be amazing if they could transfer the technology to iMacs. Imagine how high the resolution would be!

Of course, a Retina display in a MacBook Pro would require resolution independence to be supported in OS X, otherwise apps and on-screen items would appear ridiculously tiny – perhaps this is coming in OS X 10.8, or a future update to Lion (which I sort of doubt)?
